The Lemminkäinen's mother pocket square

The story

The picture illustrates Lemminkäinen, a great warrior dead following his attempt to kill the Swan of Tuonela in the realm of the dead.  His mother has dredged the pieces of his body from the river and is waiting for the bee, a messenger of the god Ukko, to bring her honey from the gods to bring her son to life again.

The Lemminkäinen's mother is a water color painting completed by Finnish painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela in 1897. The painting illustrates a passage from the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic compiled by Elias Lönnrot in the 19th century. Gallen-Kallela painted the Lemminkäinen's mother just after his daughter's death by disease and it pictures  the parent's loss and desperation to save someone who may be beyond their help. The original painting hangs in the Ateneum Museum in Helsinki.
